Causes of Burn Injuries in Dallas
Burns result from a number of causes, including the following types of accidents:
- Car accidents
- Workplace accidents
- Truck collisions
- Accidents caused by defective products
Burn Degrees
The primary categories or levels of burn injuries include:
- First-degree burns: The skin is red but not blistered. Minimal damage results from this type of burn. First-degree burns are superficial burns affecting only the outer layer of skin. There may be pain and inflammation along with redness, and the skin tends to become dry and peel as the burn heals.
- Second-degree burns: Blistering and some thickening of the skin occur. Damage to the skin goes beyond the top layer. Blisters form and become red and sore. They may pop open. Most second-degree burns take 2 to 3 weeks to heal. The worse the blistering, the more time is required for healing. Emergency medical treatment may be required if second-degree burns affect a large area of the face, hands, groin, feet or buttocks.
- Third- and fourth-degree burns: The skin may become white and leathery with widespread thickness. These are the most severe burn injuries. They can cause damage that extends through all the layers of skin and into the bloodstream, affecting organs and bones. Death is the result in some cases. In spite of horrendous damage, these burns may be less painful because of damage to the nerves that produce the sensation of pain. The skin may appear raised and leathery, charred, dark brown, or white and waxy, depending on the cause of the injury.
Third- and fourth-degree burns have a high risk of complications and can lead to shock, blood loss and infection, including sepsis (bloodstream infection) and tetanus, hypothermia (dangerously low body temperature) and hypovolemia (low blood volume). Serious burns can cause significant scarring and require skin grafting for treatment.
